SaltWire: Turret Arts Space Society gets federal funding to redevelop former Khyber building in Halifax

The Turret Arts Space Society has received a boost to its project to redevelop the former Khyber building through $200,000 in federal funding.

The money will allow the society to finalize plans to redevelop the iconic 1588 Barrington St. building in Halifax into a multipurpose arts facility dubbed the Turret Arts Space.

Once renovations are complete, the building will have a fully accessible entrance, gender-neutral and barrier-free washrooms and elevator access to all floors. It will also have a large multipurpose room, an artist-run gallery, meeting rooms and creation spaces for artists and non-profit organizations.

The business plan for the redevelopment project will focus on programming for local artists. The Khyber Centre for the Arts, which currently operates at 1880 Hollis St., is a confirmed tenant of the Turret Arts Space once the renovation project is complete.

Emily Davidson, president of Turret Arts Space Society, expressed her excitement about the project's progress.

"We're thrilled that the Turret Arts Space is gaining momentum. It's wonderful to get traction after years of keeping the dream alive for a multipurpose arts space in downtown Halifax," said Davidson.
